How to draw a cartoon car - Part 4

Finishing Up

Using some cross hatching lines, I continue to work on the background. I stepped back for awhile and decided that there are some areas that needed more work, like the ground shadow.

Finally, I used an ordinary pencil eraser and used the erasing technique to establish the highlights.

Let's take a closer look at some of the techniques that we've included in this sketch.

How can we improve on it?

Maybe I could draw in the tiny cars in the background to reflect the distance between the leader and the rest of the pack.

I could also draw some broad lines to show the curves of the race track.

How would you fill this sketch with colors?

Some stuff to think about. :

I decided right from the beginning that I need a sketch to show the various drawing techniques as a case study. As far as that is concerned, I hope you're able to see how the techniques will actually turn out on a sketch.

Using these techniques in a similar way, you can draw anything you want, both indoors and outdoors.

If you're drawing a still object indoors, repeat the process as outlined above. Start by using the measuring technique to get the forms out and work on the composition of the drawing until you get it right.

Next, start making brief or detailed notes (up to individual drawing style) on your drawing by shading in the areas with a darker pencil.

You may then firm up the lines and continue adding layers to add to the tone and texture of your drawing.

Add the finishing touches to bring out the highlights of the drawing and you have a drawing!

If you're drawing outdoors, you can adopt the same process. You may even make notes and come back indoors to complete the picture. Isn't that great?

At this stage, you should already be equipped with the basic skills to create a simple sketch.
