How useful is your art?
Many new artists who are on the journey of learning how to draw have asked me, time and again, how to start?
Of course, you would immediately realize that there are many possibilities that we can explore here.
But one very useful way of deciding where to start is to think about how useful is our art.
As artists, we don’t create art for ourselves alone. In fact, it serves us not to think of art as something that’s separate from the rest of this world. To keep ourselves grounded, and manifest our ideas in reality, we may want to consciously choose to think about what our art is, relative to the rest of this world.
For example, all commissioned artists cannot sell their art if they create art only for themselves. It is when their customers see that their art is of some value that they purchase anything from the artists. Here, anyone would recognize that different people see value differently. One person could buy a piece of art because he sees it as an abstract beauty, while another could buy the same piece of art but not for it’s abstract beauty but for it’s perfect fit into his home’s deco. You see, it’s all a matter of relativity.
So how useful is your art? I’m sure, by now, some ideas are swimming around in your head. Explore the possibilities, then make a conscious choice.
Interesting connotation. I have never thought of art as useful……….. decorative, thought provoking, memorable, uplifting, interesting or just plain goodlooking. I am sure that many other descriptions may be forthcoming. But useful? Not a criticsm but something I can’t quite get my head around at the moment.
